We visited S & J yesterday. J had impluse purchased a pony for herself - toy pony called Butterscotch, she said it was for my girls to play with but I think she has always wanted a pony. The visit inspired me to get some pictures and videos uploaded.

You Tube Vids:

Heidi wants a necklace 6th July 2007

Annie and Heidi playing Stuck in the Mud 25th July 2007

Annie and Heidi play with Buttercup the Pony

Pictures:

Heidi see’s Buttercup for the first time.

Annie was a bit nervous about approaching Buttercup to start with.

Heidi gets the hang of it.

Who am I brushing?

Annie finds the remote control car.

New freebie patterns for my cross stitch stash.

And while I’m here a couple of cool things spotted online:

The 9 most typecast actors of all time.

and from that story a You Tube vid - John Cusack in the Rain.

Did you know that a combination of coffee and excercise might help prevent skin cancer? So I’m off to mainline caffine whilst on the treadmill :grin.

I’ve updated my sidebar. Got tickers for the girls ages.

Also updated the links of which blogs I am currently trying to keep up with - I say trying because I don’t always have the time to read that I wish I did.

Aleisha won Big Brother :sad

Mind you the show ran over time by almost an hour so when they finally got around to announcing a winner I was just so relieved it was over I was not all that sad.

In big exciting news today is the final for Aussie Big Brother. Final two are a sweet country girl and the most adorable gay boy also from the country. I’d be happy for either of them to win. Of course I’ve thrown a gazillion ‘Save’ votes Zachs way - thankfully my mobile phone company are the the major sponsors of Big Brother so the SMS votes get included in my cap.

So nice not to see your stereotypical Aussie Bloke come out the winner of Big Brother.

Then Torchwood after Big Brother, I’m a happy happy TV viewer tonight.

Re the accounts, I used to use MYOB for our accounts at home as I had a copy from my work days (ah life before motherhood). But I found MYOB to clunky for home use, great for business though. I will certainly give Quicken a look. Really should get myself into gear and set up this financial years budget before Ralphs next pay arrives.

Regarding the wreath. My SIL J started work on the wreath 16 years ago but never got it finished. As her Christmas present for this year I am working to finish the wreath. Really glad I started it in January - I usually leave Christmas gifts to Oct/Nov and this has taken months to complete.

A stitchy update

I’m on to page 6 of the wreath for the backstitch. This is the final page and I really feel like I’m on the home stretch. Then it is just the words in the background I need to do. Page 5 was much easier going to backstitch as it was one of the pages I’d done the cross stitch for. Should be the same on page 6. Really helps not having to dig through knots and tangled threads at the back.

Last night I worked on a Baptism gift for Church tomorrow. I was so tired, stabbed myself in the hand several times and have a few very painful punctures this morning. Needle that came in the kit was really sharp. About midnight it occured to me I could just give this baby the card I’d made for the Playgroup baby who is not getting baptised until next week. Then I can finish the new piece off when I am less tired and use it for the Playgroup baby.

My progress so far on the original Baptism gift:

And the replacement piece mounted inside its card:

Occured to me that I should set one night a week aside to work on small gifts like this and build up a stash of home made cards/small presents. Save my hand from future puncture wounds

Heidi got her hands on my camera and was taking some lovely pictures:

Here is a shot of Mummy as she walks in the room and realises that her precious new camera is in the grip of some very sticky fingers:

One of those ‘Oh God, best to smile and entice her towards me so she does not drop the breakable thing’ kind of moments. Same sort of approach when she is climbing up the kitchen table/bathroom vanity/bookshelf etc.

Balancing Accounts

I’ve been busy going through all our bank statements for the last financial year. Australian financial year (for personal tax and most businesses) runs July through to June - so last financial year is July 2006 to June 2007. My aim is to create a reasonable budget for this financial year and then stick to it.

Wanted to work out where our money is going. Horrified to find out we spend 7% more of our total income on food than we do on rent. Think that is all the eating out. Going to have to work on that. Otherwise I’m pretty happy. Transport (car/train tickets) is only 6% of our total income, I thought that would be worse.

Now to put the spreadsheets away. We have a baptism at Church tomorrow and I only just found out. Need to get stitching on a little something for the family.

Just a quickie

Hi, just a quickie post to answer some questions.

A ‘paed’ is the abbreviation for a paediatrician, doctor who specialises in children.

Heidi has high functioning autism or aspergers. We need to get the CARS test done to work out where she falls in the autism spectrum.

6 weeks yesterday.

6 weeks since we got given a label for Heidi. Amazing how much life can change and yet not change at all in 6 short weeks.

Paed today was great. She is really strongly opposed to us moving to Halls Gap if by some freak chance I actually get the job.

We talked some about the possibility that Heidi might get into the Diamond Valley early intervention school. The Paed was really enthusiastic about that and has agreed to arrange for Heidi to get the CARS thingumy done. Although the Paed did wonder why the school wouldn’t take the results from the test at LaTrobe. I figure the school has to have all children tested on the same scale so they know exactly how the children fit in.

She filled in a bunch of other forms for us and did a physical exam of Heidi. Annie and Ralph had both come along to the consult and I was worried Annie would prove a distraction. Turned out she was a great help as the Paed did all the tests on Annie first while Heidi watched. Big sisters are good for something :grin.

All is good and we shouldn’t have to see her again for a while. Once the Halls Gap issue is settled I might go back to talk to her about how to toilet train Heidi. She has been wanting to get out of nappies for ages but so far my attempts at toilet training her have not been successful. As Heidi and Ralph communicate new ideas* better than she and I do this may be an area where Daddy leads and Mummy follows.

* I have a strong suspicion this is because they are both very visual thinkers.

Edited to add - from the CARS website I linked above.

quote:

Toenail and fingernail clipping/cleaning

It may be an exaggerated fear of being cut, a desire to not lose a part of oneself, or the metallic clicking of the clippers, but many children with PDDs hate this grooming task. It’s best if kids learn to do it for themselves as early as possible, although those with fine-motor problems may find it difficult.

Curved toenail clippers are larger and easier to operate than smaller fingernail clippers, and can do both jobs passably. This is another job that parents can do while a child is asleep.

Glad I’m not the only person in the world who sneaks in during the night to cut their childs finger nails. Still can’t get the toenails done without risking major injury to myself.

On the suggestion of a friend I’m trying to find somewhere I can orderer these butterfly nail clippers from. Been having trouble with the American orders. Have emailed a bunch of Aussie baby products suppliers to see what I can come up with.

Did not get any stitching done yesterday as I had a very cheeky monster who would not sleep.

Little bits I’ve been meaning to post.

Annie has started writing her name. She wont do it for me but will for anyone else - including the girl who served us at the McDonalds party on Saturday.

Last night after dinner Annie said to me “Queen Annie has a full tummy after that lovely dinner thank you Mummy. Please be excused now?”

Of course after that very nice comment and polite request to be excused how could I say no. So she left the table while Heidi and I continued to eat. Annie went straight from the table, grabbed a tea towel walked into the lounge and pee’d on the floor, then cleaned it up with the tea towel she’d carried in there. :eek

The girls have been playing together really well. Last night they tag teamed up with extreme cuteness to avoid bed. Did not work all that well.

Heidi is getting pretty good at trying to sneak out of her room at night to avoid going to bed.

Glenda. I think what we call a swede is a rutabaga in the states. A bit like the Bell Peppers/Capsicum and Cilantro/Coriander difference.

Taking Glendas advice I have done some serious work on the wreath last night and this morning. And Glenda I agree - Male is a state of confusion.

Getting all that stitching done was helped by Heidi waking up at 4am and refusing to go back to bed. So while Heidi watched Blue’s Clues and Dora I stitched up a storm. Poor kiddie has really upset tummy. Good thing we are seeing the Paed today.

Dinner with FIL last night was good. Ralph was at work so once again it was just FIL, the girls and I. I wanted to cook dinner in the slow cooker so I wasn’t fussing with a meal around 4-5pm which is hell hour for the girls. But recently everything I’ve done in the slow cooker has tasted the same. So I tried something very different from what I’ve done before - 1 kg chicken breasts, frozen mixed veggies (minced onion, carrots, beans, parsnip, swede, zucchini, broccoli and cauliflower*) with light coconut cream. An hour before I was ready to serve up I added a little chilli, ginger, cumin and coriander. Very nice.

* all veggies I purchased fresh and froze myself - I’m surprised how well that worked out.

Ack! Stress!

Computer is being annoying. Freezing whenever it switches to screensaver and needing to reboot. Also Firefox is playing up and hanging on me constantly.

Had to dig around and find internet explorer to get a virus scan going as I could not get HouseCall to work through Firefox.

Been a good day so far - girls went to childcare this morning and I sorted out all of our paperwork for last financial year. Got papers all sorted ready to copy and send to the accountant for our tax.

Ready to go all hardcore on Ralph about our expenses. $8 may not seem like a great deal of money but spend it every day at the beginning of your shift and again at the end and those $8s sure add up. Throw in that he is working practically everyday and well, you get the picture.

Have to call Centrelink/Family Assistance Office to report what our estimated gross annual income will be for the new financial year so they can adjust our payments.

Still no news on the job stuff. Assume I have not got it but a secret part of me is still hoping I have. Need to get a formal note so I can move on.

Been feeling real stressed of late. Find myself yelling at the girls for no reason and even pushed Annie out of the way with a hard shove the other day. Need to try and work out what is causing the stress and focus on reducing it. Have a feeling it is just a bit too much of everything. At least I’m aware of it now.

So me still trying to keep kitchen clean to maintain a little control in my world. It sounds crazy but it helps. Got to-do lists stuck up on the fridge, if I think of something I write it up there and tick stuff off as it gets done. Once a day update the list on the computer and re-print. That has helped a lot too - gives me focus. Cutting back on coffee - replacing with Pepsi Max and Tea. Seeing my doctor this afternoon, meant to be about a pap smear, might throw a little mental health chat in also.

And finally - I am not going to playgroup on Thursday. Going to get there early, set up the room and drop off all the supplies I have been storing for them. Then walk away. Got details of local autism specific playgroups, at least I think Blackburn /Glenroy are sort of local.
