Smiley Saturday time again. If you want to join in then click on the Smiley Saturday link above and head over to Lightenings to enter your Smiley Saturday link.
The Kinder Sausage Sizzle is on tomorrow, we hope to sell 900 BBQ’d sausages in bread ($1.50each), or BBQ sausage in bread with onion ($2 each), can soft drink $1 extra.
So today I peeled, sliced and cooked up 16kg of onions. Did you know after the first 6 onions you stop crying? Amazingly it was nowhere near as painful as I expected.
We hope to raise enough money for the kinder to get the final 3 items on the teachers wishlist. We raised enough in Term 1 to get the first 2 items. And that is why I am smiling, because all our hardwork is (hopefully) paying off.
Oh and if anyone has suggestions to get the onion stink out of my hands I’d really appreciate it

As far as I know, onion just has to wear out. I used to work in a pizza place where we had to slice the onions by hand. Ugh. Some of the coworkers swore by soaking your hands in diluted bleach, but I found the bleach odor just as off-putting. Not to mention what that does to your hands!

Fundraising can be hard work but then the smiles come out when you achieve your goals. Hope it all goes well and everyone is extra hungry.

Lemon juice? Rub your hands in some lemon juice? Not sure if it will help or not……16kg is a lot!
I love sausage sizzles! I SOOOOO would of bought one! I had a BBQ today actually although bbq`s here are nothing like bbq`s in Australia……

You could try washing/soaking your hands in lemon juice. I know that when I’ve chopped onions and had the smell on my hands, I’ve given it a try and it seems to work pretty good.

Rub bi carb of soda all over your hands, rinse and repeat as needed.
Other fund raiser ideas -
Wrap a book in plain paper with a book mark in a random spot and get them to guess the page number.
Guess then number of pickled onions/gherkins/stuffed olives, etc in the jar, with the jar as the prize.
Get ladies to empty their handbags; keep a tally and the one with the lowest amount of stuff wins, the one with the highest can get a booby prize (maybe that jar of pickled onions
)

Surprised that no one knew the answer. After cutting onions run the cold tap and run your fingers up and down the steel blade (carefully!) under the water. Works every time.
You can buy steel soap (a steel bar in the shape of a bar of soap) to do it more safely and effectively. I needz me one of those!
Hope the sausage sizzle went well!

Rub your hands on stainless steel. Have you seen those stainless steel soap things you can buy? They’re supposed to be great for getting stuff like fish and onion smells out of hands. But I imagine anything you have that is stainless steel would work.
Sounds like you’re doing a BRILLIANT job with all your fundraising efforts. Well Done!!!

Thank you for all the suggestions. I think it was too late by the time I got around to trying them – that onion smell had sunk right in. Thankfully 4 days later it has now worn out.
Will have to remember to try them when we do the next sausage sizzle.
