Rockmelons Rock Autism

September 3, 2008 · 11 Comments

Last night hubby to the girls out to Heidi’s fathers day evening at her Pre-School. This is the only one he could attend so Annie got to go also even though it is Heidis Pre-School not hers.

They had a fabulous time.

One thing that stood out to hubby was that whilst Annie happily munched down on the party food provided Heidi had no interest at all, she just wanted her snack like she usually at at kinder. No party food for Heidi not when there was freshly sliced rockmelon available in her snack box.

And this is what rocks about my little girl – she’d rather eat raw fruit and vegetables than most junk foods.

I’ve been cursing her fussy eating habits, she does not like food that touches, she doesn’t like food that is unknown and she doesn’t like food she can’t see inside of (like pies). I had finally realised after reading (I think at wrongplanet.net) that this is a sensory thing. I knew it was a sensory thing before, Heidi likes crunchy vs soft foods. But what I hadn’t got was the whole flavour of food is also a sensory experience – and if you bite into a pie crust you don’t know what is under the pastry and what that sensory experiences might hold.

Combine that new information with the realisation last night that “hey it is easier to cut up some fresh fruit/veg and put them on a plate for Heidi and skip the whole cooking thing”.

A lightbulb moment inspired by a few slices of rockmelon.

Not that I wont continue to torture her with cooked food but smaller portions perhaps with the ingredients separated so she can get a better idea of what is in there. And always the fresh fruit and veg available.

On a totally different note I’m off for my colonoscopy, which is scheduled for 30 minutes time, so best get over to the hospital now

My 5½ year old is like that – she prefers fruits and veggies to junk. She’ll often opt for apple slices or other fruit options in fast food kids meals instead of french fries. And my parents took her to a buffet place once…her food choices were the salads, fruit, and veggies, plus a little bit of mac n cheese. The other kids were loading up on chicken nuggets, pizza slices, and other fried junk. It’s nice to know that at least one of my kiddos will be a healthy eater!

I totally go with Heidi on that one. I wont eat stuff that I can’t see inside either, like pies, spring rolls etc. If I ‘have’ to eat them then I take them apart.

Good to see she likes the healthy stuff! :o )

My sister has dined on ‘food platter’ for all of her life. She’s disgustingly healthy.

Hope the colonoscopy goes well and is conclusive for you.

How about you get Heidi to help you make some little pies, different flavours, so she can see what’s going in and will have an idea of what to expect if she’s ever faced with one again?
Wish I loved my fruit as much as Heidi does ;)

I wish my son would eat fruit and veg in preference to junk.

Good luck with the colonoscopy – hope all goes well for you :)

Kendra – it is a reassuring thing to see a child choose to eat the healthy option :)

Little Cat – I’m glad to see she is not alone. I might suggest she pull things apart like you do.

Anja – disgustingly healthy is a good thing, I suppose. Colonoscopy went well thank you.

Jayne – That is a great idea, she likes to help in the kitchen. Might wait until life is a little calmer though.

Gemisht – Thank you. We are lucky Heidi chose the healthy option.

Reading your comment-to-comments, I see the colonoscopy went well. Will you receive results soon, or have to wait forever?

Glad Heidi likes her healthy foods. :D

That is great that she prefers fresh food over junk! I was not a vegetable eater as a child but my mum made sure we had a fruit plate every night with dinner to compensate for that.

You mentioned that Heidi does not like foods touching (I was the same as a child) and it made me think of muffin tin dinners.

I first found out about it at a blog here http://jojoebi.blogspot.com/2008/08/muffin-tin-dinner_26.html but I think the idea came from someone else.

I thought as it would be quite sensory as well and that the foods didn`t touch that it might be something she would like. Also, I am sure Annie would like it too!
