Asperger’s Syndrome

Remember the troubles with Annie and school?

Starting to see the Counselor
Thoughts after hearing Carol Gray talk
Well That Is Odd
It is hard to be cranky
So much to say

I spent much much time today with Dr Janine Manjiviona the Clinical Psychologist and we now have a formal diagnosis – Asperger’s Syndrome.

From Tony Attwood website:

From my clinical experience I consider that children and adults with Aspergers Syndrome have a different, not defective, way of thinking.

The person usually has a strong desire to seek knowledge, truth and perfection with a different set of priorities than would be expected with other people. There is also a different perception of situations and sensory experiences. The overriding priority may be to solve a problem rather than satisfy the social or emotional needs of others.

So that was my day, an answer to a problem, couple of possible solutions I now need to investigate, truckload more reading to do.

Got to say Dr Manjiviona – awesome person, very easy to talk to and that helped so very very much.

But for now hot decaf coffee, some quiet time with my internets whilst hubby puts the children to bed and then sleep, much much sleep.

Annie is still Annie, she is the Annie she was, she will be the Annie she will be, what I hope and pray is that now we will have happy Annie around more often, that we can find a way to ease the trauma of school.

Glad some answers have finally come about and that you can now work towards seeing more of the happy and relaxed Annie. We’ll be thinking of you all, especially Annie – and our prayers too, that everything will work out okay. xx

I admire your attitude. You are so right that she is the same kid – you’ve now got an arsenal of new ways to try to help her so she can remain her happy self.

I’ll be curious if you decide to talk to Annie about the term Asperger’s and how she takes it.

sometimes it just helps to be able to put a name to something to know how best to tackle it.

good for you for doing what you needed to do for Annie’s happiness and best future.

Can I say I’m pleased??? Pleased that you have a diagnosis for Annie that will open doors for her that she hasn’t been able to open till now. I know that it won’t be easy for you or her, but I sincerely hope that this means she can be Happy Annie :)

You have a label for intervention, but Annie doesn’t need to be aware of the label – for now.

Annie needs help to feel comfortable with who she is and to minimise the issues she has had with school. When YOU feel it’s the best time to discuss ‘labels’ with her, then approach it.

I am looking forward to reading more about your journey… we are both walking along the same path. How old is Annie? My son (also AS) is 11.
