I was shopping with my sister in law yesterday and she commented on how hard it is to find a summer dress with sleeves for herself.
A bit later I was walking through the same shopping centre carpark and overheard a couple of women who were leaving, one was saying to the other that she couldn’t find a dress with sleeves for summer at this particular shopping centre and the other lady suggested shopping online.
My mother rang from QLD concerned about some dresses she was planning to buy for Annie and Heidi, ‘I can’t find anything with sleeves’.
Now I know there is a simple solution – wear a t-shirt underneath, but sometimes it is just too hot in summer to wear two layers of clothing. Even the t-shirts I can get for my girls only have half or quarter length sleeves. If I want a full length sleeve I have to get them shirts from the boys section.
It has been 3 years now since I wrote to several department stores and our local paper complaining about the lack of sun smart clothing available for girls.
Skin cancer is the most common cause of cancer in Australia.
It makes me sad that summer clothing keeps getting skimpier and smaller in seeming opposition to the recommendation to wear sun safe clothing.

A major national cancer conference warned that people should stay out of the sun or wear some kind of protection if they had to be out in it.

Sad and frustrating world.

And what about sunscreen? I never saw any summer dress here with sleeves either.

Sunscreen is in addition to sleeves. The motto here is
Slip, Slop, Slap.
Slip on a shirt and sunglasses
Slop on sunscreen
and
Slap on a hat
and stay in the shade as much as possible.

Okay, Kelley’s comment actually came closer to my take on the whole sleeveless summer dress issue. I know that where you live, it’s a health consideration. In my corner of the world, it’s all about aesthetics … and my days of looking good in a sleeveless summer dress passed by several years ago.

Funny, I was just browsing a catalogue here today and remarked that none of the dresses had sleeves. And we’re even worse off here – the sun is just as strong, but it’s cooler so we spend more time out in it! (When I’ve been to Qld, I’ve spent most of my time inside escaping the heat, or at least seeking the shade).

Since when did fashion and sensible exist in the same sentence? Sadly, fashion bigwigs don’t give a flying fig about sensible
